Indie Artists and Webcasting; Observations of a Dj
First, before anything else is mentioned, this whole webcasting thing is still relatively new to me. Until perhaps Dec of 2006, I was clueless about Internet Radio. Surprised? Ditto. I did, way back in the day, (just after dinosaurs…) some outlaw AM broadcasting/Dj’ing, up in the NYC/Brooklyn area but even then, I played ALL kinds of music. That being said…..
Started NAB Radio, with an eye on ‘mainstream music’ from myself and the Dj’s that signed on with me. Known Artists, known Labels, all very ‘vanilla’ and proper. Listened to a few webcasters, (internet radio stations) and became convinced I was ‘on the right track’. Met Dj EyeBee and listened to “Indie” and “Unsigned” Artists and thier music. Whoa, hold the phone! Not bad. Sorted through a couple of mainstream Dj’s…..Then I met Dj Blue. Stop the Train!
So, I go back and listen to other Webcasters again and learn that they play ‘lip service’ to Indie and Unsigned Artists. That means, my friends, that on the very rare occasion that other webcasters/stations go “live” for those who listen, they play very little Indie/unsigned music. Arghhh?
Why is that? Is the music not good enough?
You dam right it’s good enough! Indie/Unsigned is the cutting edge of music, in this Dj’s opinion. Dj’s EyeBee and Blue had to beat me about the head and shoulders but I listened, I learned and am now a better Dj because of them and because of the great music and I feel my shows are even better!
Webcasting is a tough and very competitive business. Most webcasters, play it safe and play known and accepted music/Artists. Indie/Unsigned? They think and have said; “Well, get a contract, get “FM” air-time and “we’ll see.”
Friends, North American Broadcasting.com does not think that way. We are here to stay and we will play ‘cutting edge music’. The Dj’s at NAB Radio are proud to play the music that comes from all of the Indie/Unsigned Artists.
Share the music, share the love.
