Say The Raven

Hear them here on NAB Radio!

Say the Raven are a four piece alternative rock band hailing from Brighton in the UK.  Formed in late May 2008 the band takes their influences from the post grunge era, from bands such as Bush, Rival Schools and Hell is for Heroes.

Formed through mutual friendship, Nick Bland (Vocals and Guitar), Nathan Rickards (Guitar), Dave Delgado (Bass) and Ryan Holt (Drums) have had relative local success thanks to Brighton’s Juice FM giving the band’s debut track Quicksand considerable air time.  Say the Raven have also been featured on Kerrang radio as an unsigned act to look out for and also featured in a Manchester based fanzine as one of the top ten UK unsigned Acts for 2008!

The band are currently recording their debut EP titled Going Nowhere with producer Gez Walton (This is menace, Ghost of a thousand) and are planning on self-releasing this summer.

Fat riffs with solid beats, incorporated into huge songs with intricate passages and complex melodies” Ace, Brighton’s Juice FM (Ex-Skunk Anansie Guitarist)

Lowcountry Bluegrass – The Bushels Play Live

without comments

No Gravatar

When: 5/20/2009 7:00 PM

At: Dog and Duck-Summerville
Ridgeway Plaza
1580-J Old Trolley Rd,
Summerville,
South Carolina

Cost: FREE

Acoustic quartet THE BUSHELS stretch out from the traditional bluegrass some may expect across the five tunes on their debut, self-titled EP.

Recorded at Blacktree Studio on John’s Island, things sound like a cool, band-around -the-mic hoe-down — undistracted, under-polished, pure, and genuine. Propelled by Guilds Hollowell’s dynamic banjo work, opening track "Sweet T" rambles at a rapid tempo typical of upbeat Appalachian-style bluegrass, but things mellow out considerably on the morose ballad "Lady Luck" and the folksy strummer "Cherokee Girl."

The raspy lead vocals of mandolinist Mal Jones and the harmonies of guitarist Jim Algar complement the rustic vibes. The intricately-arranged "Madeline" is a highlight here, too. Lyrically, the four-chord anthem and closing number "Music" sums up the spirit of the Bushels — ambling down a musical road "so long it’s become [their] life."—T. Captain Kennedy

New this week on NAB Radio…

Captain Kennedy, a 7-piece folk rock band from Northern Ireland, are earthy, their music visceral. The past couple of years have seen the band establish their position on the Irish music scene with gigs in high profile venues across the country, including a sold-out Mandela Hall. Support slots for the likes of ‘The Broken Family Band’ and appearances at the Out To Lunch Arts Festival, The Botanic Arts Festival, The Bacchanal Festival, Belfast, The Gasyard Feile, Vibefest 2008 and Gifted at The Empire have helped develop Captain Kennedy’s reputation as an unmissable live act.
image The band have received regular airplay on both local and national radio and appeared on BBC 2’s Blas Ceoil programme in March of this year. Captain Kennedy also made an appearance on Irish TV station TG4’s Deis Roc programme featuring some of the best unsigned talent from these shores. With a number of high profile gigs coming up including the Belfast Film Festival and The Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, and a debut album due out before the end of the year, expect to see a lot more from Captain Kennedy in 2009.
New EP
The band have recently released their second 4-track EP Factory Whistle Call in early January. “Factory Whistle Call”, recorded at the Start Together Studios at Belfast’s new Oh Yeah Centre, is not smooth, controlled, or delivered with the glossy perfection of much modern pop music. This is cracked, rootsy material. Their harmonies are sometimes crooked, and singer Ciaran Lavery’s voice can get gravelly to the point of death-rattle. The EP, which has already received airplay national and local radio, captures the true spirit of Captain Kennedy’s live sound.

What the Press have said…

Stuart Bailie (BBC & former co-editor of NME): "Captain Kennedy are well immersed in the "old weird America" that writer Greil Marcus covered in his book Invisible Republic. They take their name from a Neil Young song but they’re also fit to sing old Dixie down. Excellent vocals. I likes ‘em."
The Irish News: “Sweetest Friend walks a fine line between pop balladry and indie soul and would be playing on daytime radio stations right now if there was any justice in the world.”
BBC Across the Line: “When you’ve got the Americana sound as polished as these guys do, it’s no surprise it goes down as well as a Mississippi Mud Pie!”
NI Chart.com: "One of the must see live acts around the North today. "
Alternative Ulster: “This is preternaturally aged music, ready to caress your heart with its dusky fingers.”
Americana-UK: “There’s something instantly attractive about their obvious belief and capturing of the redemptive power and soul of music”

Saturday 22nd May, International Pop Overthrow, The Cavern, 10 Mathew Street Liverpool L2 6RE

A dream comes true!!! You may have guessed we love the whole 60’s music scene and its history so to get the opportunity to play a venue so key to the careers of those bands really is something else.

The International Pop Overthrow (or IPO, as it has affectionately become known) is a pop music festival which is held in week long stints at 13 cities in America and, for the last few years, a week in Liverpool. Each International Pop Overthrow takes over the local live music hot spots and features showcases from 25-180 of the best pop bands from around the world. The purpose of International Pop Overthrow is two-fold: one aim is to give every worthy band who’d like to play their music in a festival atmosphere the chance to do so, and the other is to bring pop music the attention it so richly deserves.

For further info on I.P.O. go to www.internationalpopoverthrow.com

We are playing two slots on the Saturday: 1:45 PM at The Cavern Pub and 8:15 PM at The Cavern Club on the back stage.  Entry is free!!!
