Surface Unsigned would like to remind any unsigned bands that want to take part in the 2010 Festival you only have until January 31st 2010 to apply. Starting in February, the 2010 Surface Unsigned Festival will tour the UK, giving artists from cities such as Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, London, Brighton and Portsmouth the chance to compete for £60,000 worth of prizes. The eventual winner will pick up £5,000 in cash, a slot at the 2011 Sziget Festival in Budapest – playing to a potential audience of 65,000 people – a digital distribution contract with Zimbalam Digital and various other incentives.

“The quality of the bands that have applied so far for 2010 has been amazing,” says Surface Unsigned managing director Jay Mitchell. “We’ve already started to book acts for this year’s Festival.” Surface is still accepting applications and anyone interested should visit the website at www.surfaceunsigned.co.uk. The top 16 bands from Surface Unsigned in 2010 will play an industry showcase at London’s IndigO2 and support a major touring act. The event’s judging panel is headed by Jon Brookes, drummer of The Charlatans. For bands interested in applying to the 2010 Surface Unsigned Festival please visit www.surfaceunsigned.co.uk and fill out an online application.

News from The Deccas

We hope you survived the Christmas period and are looking to burn off those excess calories by coming along to one or more of the following gigs.

We’re at the start of what’s already looking like a fairly busy year kicking off with a live interview/studio appearance on the legendary Radio Caroline! We’ll be on Ray Copeland’s show from around 10pm on Monday 11th January playing a couple of songs live and chatting about the band. We also get the chance to do a “Desert Island Discs” and pick a track each. Go to www.radiocaroline.co.uk for listening info.

Saturday 16th January sees us return to Tommy Flynn’s on Camden High Street (nearest tube Mornington Crescent) for a drop of the black stuff and (we believe) four bands. Only a couple of quid to get in.

Friday 29th January we take a trip to the south east coast of Kent. The Deal Welfare Club and Social Institute is the venue and for just £1 (one single pound?!) you can catch us open the three band night that includes Autumn Few (formed from the ashes of the excellent Springtide Cavalry) and indie-ska quartet The Flack. We’re reliably informed that Deal/Dover area has a burgeoning live music scene so we’re expecting a full house and the bar will be reasonably priced too. Come on, first payday after christmas, let’s have it!

Saturday 30th January and if you can’t haul your asses down to Deal or, like us, fancy a second night of it we’ll be back at where we played our very first gig; Tap n Tin, Railway Street, Chatham. The Suburban Kings team always present a line up of great bands and this night will be no exception: The Deccas, Archie Wah Wah, The Lovedays and new act The Facades. There is also “secret unannounced guests”…. Entry will be around a fiver, you will not be disappointed.

That’s for starters, we have more gigs booked through to May(details will follow) so we hope to catch up with you soon.
All the best for 2010 folks!!

Goodness me folks, the end is nigh and there’s only a month left til christmas but you can relax in the knowledge that The Deccas will be there for you!
We’ve already started booking in gigs for the new year but the rest of 2009 looks like this:
Monday 23rd November The Forum Tunbridge Wells supporting Towers of London
Back from the brink of musical destruction the Tourettes brothers have re-jigged their line up and paying their dues again on a ‘Back to Basics’ tour.
Tickets are available via the link http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wegottickets.com%2Fevent%2F61379&h=0b0ed3359b2cc64c6c76c7a2f848e39c
Friday 4th December Nag’s Head Rochester with The Effectives
Promoting their new four track E.P. recorded alongside Parisian band Smash, The Effectives headline this early advent knees-up at our local boozer. Bob "from The Dentists" Collins will kick the night off with a solo set and your humble narrators sandwiched inbetween.
Free entry, easy to find with great beers and staff, what more do you want to start the festive season?
Saturday 19th December Beacon Court Tavern Gillingham supporting Who’s Who
Nuff said? We think so but just in case you’ve never come across them before, Who’s Who are the greatest tribute to one of Britain’s greatest rock bands; The Who(see what they did there..). We’ve had the pleasure of warming the Beacon up for them in the past and we anticipate another blinding night this time round too. Entry is six quid.
Just a reminder here; if you haven’t already got your hands on a copy of our album "Ways To The Sun" you can get it direct from us at these gigs or email us your details and we’ll arrange a paypal payment. Alternatively you can pop into Recollect Records, North St, Strood or Magic Discs, Station Rd, Rainham or the New Arts Centre’s Nucleus Store, Dockside Outlet, Chatham and pick one up. They make idea stocking fillers, hint hint…
We do hope we’ll see you soon; we’ll be in touch again before the year is out with news of what lies in store for 2010.

"Angela Easterling is a bright shining star on the country/folk/alt.music horizon! Her gift is so special. I loved listening to her new "Black Top Road" CD! Brought me back to the time the Byrds recorded "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" – tradition meets youthful exuberance!"  Roger McGuinn (founder of The Byrds)

"Angela Easterling is a quietly plaintive singer who rewards attentive listening. Her Blacktop Road is out-and-out "alt. country," A lot of the songs here sound like they’ve been around for years—that’s a compliment—including the sweetly yearning cover of "Helpless." "  Editor’s Picks, Oxford American

"Dynamite honky-tonk singer Angela Easterling brings a tough traditionalist sound to ballads and ravers alike on her fine new CD Black Top Road."  Philadelphia Inquirer

Hello music lovers,

I’ve got some news to share and the deets on some upcoming shows.

The highlights….

THE BOXCAR LILIES
Well, we’ve been dating for a few months now, but Katie Clarke, Stephanie Marshall and I have decided to make it official. Over a few beers, a yummy plate of wings, and the sound of Pat and Tex LaMountain playing in the background, The Boxcar Lilies were born.  Yes it was a shotgun wedding.  We married our love for great songwriting and sweet harmonies and have been having a wonderful time putting together songs that we’ll be performing in Sunderland, MA and Robbinsville, NJ this month. Details below!

SONGWRITING WORKSHOP
I’m particularly looking forward to co-hosting a songwriting workshop and performance with award-winning songwriter Jim Colbert in Bellefonte, PA.  See you soon Jim!

Hope to see the rest of you soon too.
Jenny

PS – A big thanks to all of you that voted in the Mountain Stage NewSong People’s Choice contest.  Alas, I did not win, but I’m grateful nonetheless because of all of you!

PARADISE STREET is a collaboration between singer-songwriter Paul Jeffery and lyricist Cath Walls. This association has resulted in a new album ‘CATHARSIS’: a 13-song collection of melodic and often touching unrequited love songs, featuring some of the UK’s top female singing talent.

Both from West Yorkshire, England, Paul already enjoys a successful solo career with 2 album releases to date and Cath is an accomplished writer and a semi-finalist from the highly-acclaimed UK Songwriting Contest 2008. Their previous teamwork resulted in a national UK single release ‘More Than The Need’ which reached the Top 20 in the UK Independent Charts.
